Making numbers readable and useful

Data, impact & visualisation team

A volunteer role in the data, impact and visualisation team: you report to the Research, Quality and Impact Lead. You work day to day with the Data Infrastructure Coordinator.

Assignments

  • Maintain the team’s geographic reference: the country table and its codes, and subnational boundaries from geoBoundaries or the COD-AB datasets
  • Build maps on climate, agriculture and health with The Impossible Futures Lab and The Southern Compass Lab: rainfall, temperature, yields, malnutrition, region by region
  • Map the data from The Digital Palaver’s work on artificial intelligence in Africa
  • Use Google Earth Engine, under its tier for research and non-profit organisations, for rainfall, vegetation and land cover
  • Write the team’s mapping guidelines: brand palettes, projections, labels, source credits
  • Prepare interactive web maps with the Interactive Data Visualisation Developer
  • Choose palettes that everyone can read, including people with colour vision deficiency
  • Show disputed borders neutrally, with a note explaining the choice made

Tools to master

  • QGIS: map preparation and layout
  • Google Earth Engine: satellite imagery and climate indicators
  • geoBoundaries and COD-AB: administrative boundaries
  • Google Colab and Python: spatial joins

How we measure success

  • Accurate, sourced maps that read well on a phone
  • A geographic reference that every analyst reuses

Profile we are looking for

  • Strong command of GIS software, ideally QGIS
  • A sense of cartographic design: colour, classes, legends
  • Rigour with projections, scales and sources

A volunteer role, open to young people

Every role we offer is fully voluntary. The experience we ask for can come from a course, a student project, an internship, volunteering or a personal project: every skill counts, wherever you gained it. Our roles are designed first and foremost for young people, and we weigh your motivation and potential as carefully as your track record. Want to be part of something big? Apply.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Google Earth Engine or remote sensing
  • Studies in geography, environment, agronomy or planning
  • Good English and French

What this role gives you

  • Maps published and credited to you in YouthShare’s studies
  • Hands-on mapping applied to climate, agriculture and digital issues
  • Work with three labs and analysts from several continents

The one-year commitment

A non-profit project is built over time. Every volunteer therefore commits for at least one year: time to settle in, carry the assignment through and pass on what they have learned. The weekly time depends on the role and is given in each role description.

How selection works

  1. Online application

You choose a role, present your background and attach your CV. A confirmation email gives you your reference.

  2. Profile review

The Talent team reads every application, matches it with the needs of the role and sends you a first reply by email within three days on average.

  3. Video interview

A conversation to get to know each other and shape the assignment together.

  4. Decision and arrival

You receive our answer by email, followed by a welcome to the team and access to its tools.
