Making numbers readable and useful

Data, impact & visualisation team

YouthShare’s analyses draw on data: climate, employment, education, demography. The team turns it into clear charts, maps and infographics, and measures the association’s impact.

Assignments

  • Write the ethical framework for YouthShare’s interviews and surveys: principles, informed consent, confidentiality, sharing results with participants
  • Design information sheets and consent forms in English and French, in words every participant understands
  • Set the rules specific to minors in clubs: agreement from a parent or legal guardian, an explanation suited to their age, and the young person’s own assent
  • Review interview guides and questionnaires before each study, and give an ethics opinion to the labs, the Southern Compass correspondents and the data, impact and visualisation team
  • Protect people at risk: anonymous testimony on sensitive topics, explicit consent before anyone is quoted by name
  • Work with the Data Protection Coordinator on the retention and anonymisation of collected data, and with the AI Ethics & Governance Lead whenever a transcription or an analysis goes through Claude or ChatGPT
  • Build these requirements into the method standards set by the Research, Quality and Impact Lead
  • Train the members who conduct interviews, and receive questions and concerns from participants

Tools to master

  • Microsoft Forms: consent forms and questionnaires
  • Microsoft 365: shared information sheets and templates, training sessions on Teams
  • GDPR and guidance from the CNIL, the French data protection authority: research, consent, anonymisation
  • Claude: comparing information sheets with reference frameworks, with every result checked

What you will deliver

  • An ethical framework for interviews and surveys, in English and French
  • Model information sheets and consent forms, including a version for minors and their parents
  • An ethics review checklist for interview guides and questionnaires
  • A training module for members who conduct interviews

Profile we are looking for

  • A background in social sciences, public health, law or philosophy
  • Knowledge of the principles of research ethics: informed consent, confidentiality, risk reduction
  • Good listening skills and sensitivity to cultural contexts
  • Clear writing that speaks to very different audiences

The one-year commitment

A non-profit project is built over time. Every volunteer therefore commits for at least one year: time to settle in, carry the assignment through and pass on what they have learned. The weekly time depends on the role and is given in each role description.
