Making numbers readable and useful

Data, impact & visualisation team

A volunteer role in the data, impact and visualisation team: you report to the Research, Quality and Impact Lead. You work day to day with the Data Infrastructure Coordinator.

Assignments

  • Write the Colab notebooks that query public APIs: World Bank, IMF, OECD, FAO, WHO, ILOSTAT
  • Turn proven notebooks into scheduled GitHub Actions jobs that refresh each dataset as its source publishes
  • Move every dataset through the team’s processing stages: raw, cleaned, harmonised (country codes, years, units), published
  • Write a dictionary for each dataset: variables, units, sources, processing steps
  • Keep all processing code under version control in GitHub, with a review before each merge
  • Connect Looker Studio and the Data Hub to the published tables, with the Data Infrastructure Coordinator
  • Set up automatic quality checks: missing values, duplicates, breaks in series, units
  • Keep pipelines within the free quotas of the team’s tools, and flag early any need beyond them

A typical week, at your pace

  • One scheduled job added or improved
  • The week’s quality checks reviewed
  • A check-in with a lab analyst about their needs
  • Code documentation brought up to date

Tools to master

  • Python, pandas and SQL: processing and queries
  • Google Colab: acquisition and cleaning notebooks
  • GitHub and GitHub Actions: versioned code and scheduled jobs
  • Looker Studio: dashboards connected to the published tables

Profile we are looking for

  • Strong Python and SQL
  • A taste for clean, tested, documented code
  • Rigour with units, dates and country codes

The one-year commitment

A non-profit project is built over time. Every volunteer therefore commits for at least one year: time to settle in, carry the assignment through and pass on what they have learned. The weekly time depends on the role and is given in each role description.
