Data, impact & visualisation team

With the data, impact and visualisation team, YouthShare builds its own data, indicators and scenarios. This is a volunteer role in the team: you report to the Research, Quality and Impact Lead, who leads the team and sets its priorities; you coordinate the infrastructure and the day-to-day work of the data volunteers.

Assignments

  • Look after the team’s data infrastructure: a catalogue of sources, a record for each dataset and clear processing stages (raw, cleaned, harmonised, published)
  • Organise the team’s data library in Google Drive, with a folder and a record for each dataset
  • Run data governance: an owner, a licence, a version and a validation status for every dataset, with classification aligned on the Classification label (public, internal, confidential)
  • Review processing code and data dictionaries, kept under version control in GitHub, with the Data Pipeline Specialist
  • Set access rules for datasets that contain personal data, with the Data Protection Coordinator
  • Coordinate the data volunteers day to day: the Data Pipeline Specialist, the Open Data Research Officer, the GIS and Mapping Specialist, the Statistical Analyst, the Survey Research Officer and the lab analysts
  • Support the labs on the data side of their work, and credit every contribution to a publication using the CRediT taxonomy
  • Write the team’s guides on governance, validation and attribution with the Research, Quality and Impact Lead

Tools to master

  • Google Drive and the Classification label: the data library
  • Google Sheets and Looker Studio: tables, indicators and dashboards
  • GitHub: processing code, dictionaries and catalogue
  • Google Chat and Meet: coordinating the data volunteers

Your first three months

First month
Meeting each lab and each data volunteer, and a review of the data library and the data source register
Second month
Governance and access rules presented to the team lead, records of the first datasets in the catalogue
Third month
The first datasets published through the team’s processing stages, each with its catalogue record

How we measure success

  • Every published dataset traces back to its source, licence and processing
  • Labs that draw on a shared, up-to-date library

Profile we are looking for

  • Experience in data management: a data warehouse, a database, a research or analytics project
  • Hands-on SQL and an analysis language such as Python or R
  • A feel for governance: documentation, licences, access rights
  • The ability to coordinate a remote team and hold a steady course

A volunteer role, open to young people

Every role we offer is fully voluntary. The experience we ask for can come from a course, a student project, an internship, volunteering or a personal project: every skill counts, wherever you gained it. Our roles are designed first and foremost for young people, and we weigh your motivation and potential as carefully as your track record. Want to be part of something big? Apply.

Nice to have

  • Experience of a data warehouse or a research database
  • Knowledge of open data on Africa and the Global South
  • Good English and French

What this role gives you

  • Coordinating a research data infrastructure, from the first raw dataset to publication
  • An international team of specialists and analysts, working with all five labs
  • Recognised practice in data governance and CRediT attribution, to highlight on your CV
