YouthShare on the ground

Clubs & events team

You host the webinars and online exchanges you help create, where leaders, researchers and public figures talk with young people. The palaver and debate facilitators keep their labs’ own formats. A volunteer role in the clubs and events team: you report to the Programmes and Field Lead.

Assignments

  • Host sessions in English or French: opening, framing the topic, questions, follow-ups, close
  • Prepare each session with the speaker and the Speaker Research and Programming Officer: angle, questions, running order
  • Bring young participants into the conversation and put their questions, live and from the chat
  • Keep each part of the session to time
  • Run audience questions with the co-host who moderates the chat, under YouthShare’s code of conduct
  • Protect young participants: image and voice on screen with the person’s written consent, and a parent’s for a minor; first names only on air; two YouthShare adults in every exchange with minors
  • Apply the editorial charter: accuracy, respect for people, balance of views
  • After each session, write a summary for the lab concerned and note the key moments, with timecodes, for the Short-Form Video Editor

Tools to master

  • Google Meet: live hosting and live captions
  • Google Docs: running orders, questions and summaries
  • Google Chat: coordination with the technical producer during the session

How we measure success

  • Sessions that stay on their question and on time
  • Young people speaking up in every session
  • A summary delivered to the lab after each session

Profile we are looking for

  • Clear, composed speaking in English or French
  • Hosting experience: radio, student television, a debating society, negotiation simulations, conferences
  • Calm, attentive listening and curiosity
  • Care in preparation
  • Open to adults aged eighteen and over

Nice to have

  • Fluent command of both languages, to host bilingual sessions
  • Knowledge of one or more of the labs’ themes

What this role gives you

  • Experience hosting guests recognised in their fields, to highlight on your CV
  • Guided progress in public speaking, interviewing and moderation
  • Sessions to your name, visible online

The one-year commitment

A non-profit project is built over time. Every volunteer therefore commits for at least one year: time to settle in, carry the assignment through and pass on what they have learned. The weekly time depends on the role and is given in each role description.
