You subtitle YouthShare’s videos: the webinars and online exchanges you help create, clips and training videos. This is a volunteer role in the editorial team, alongside the translator-editors: you report to the Head of Publications.

Assignments

  • Transcribe and time subtitles in the original language, from an automatic first draft checked line by line
  • Translate subtitles from English into French or from French into English, using the translator-editors’ shared glossary
  • Respect reading speed and line length, so the text reads well on screen
  • Check the spelling of names, job titles and the titles of works quoted
  • Prepare the burnt-in subtitles for short clips with the Short-Form Video Editor
  • Upload subtitles to YouTube with the YouTube Specialist
  • Subtitle the training videos for the Google Classroom courses
  • Add sound descriptions useful to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers

Tools to master

  • Subtitle Edit or Aegisub: timing and formatting subtitles
  • YouTube Studio: uploading subtitles
  • Whisper, run locally: a first transcript, checked in full
  • Google Docs: the association’s shared glossary

How we measure success

  • Every video published with subtitles in both languages
  • Subtitles faithful to what was said and easy to read

Profile we are looking for

  • Excellent written French and English
  • Care for the right word and for concision
  • Rigour in checking names and facts
  • Open to adults aged eighteen and over

The one-year commitment

A non-profit project is built over time. Every volunteer therefore commits for at least one year: time to settle in, carry the assignment through and pass on what they have learned. The weekly time depends on the role and is given in each role description.

How selection works

  1. Online application

You choose a role, present your background and attach your CV. A confirmation email gives you your reference.

  2. Profile review

The Talent team reads every application, matches it with the needs of the role and sends you a first reply by email within three days on average.

  3. Video interview

A conversation to get to know each other and shape the assignment together.

  4. Decision and arrival

You receive our answer by email, followed by a welcome to the team and access to its tools.
